Phoenix, Arizona -- Indian Hills dropped a couple of close games on Tuesday on its season-opening trip -- losing 3-2 to South Mountain and 10-8 to Scottsdale.
The Falcons saw a late lead slip away in the game with South Mountain and a late-game rally come up short against Scottsdale.
Indian Hills used superb pitching from starter Christian Torres and reliever Matt Lashlee to blank South Mountain for the first seven innings of the day's first game. Torres threw five shutout innings in his first start as a Falcon. He gave up only one hit, walked two and struck out four before being lifted after throwing 64 pitches.
The Falcons broke a scoreless deadlock with two runs in the top of the 8th, the first scoring on an error and the second on a pinch-hit single by Tyler Hermann.
South Mountain got one of the runs back in the bottom of the 8th and then won it with two runs in the bottom of the 9th, the game-winner scoring on a one-out bases-loaded walk.
IHCC leadoff hitter Darryl Velez had two of his team's six hits.
After spotting Scottsdale a 7-1 lead, Indian Hills battled back with three runs in the 5th, two in the 6th and two more in the 7th, but their comeback attempt came up two runs short.
IHCC outhit the hosts 11-8 with Velez, Taylor Ostrich, Joel Booker and Felix DeJesus with two-hit games. Eight different players drove in a run and eight scored once.
Derek Kawlewski and Brennan Floss split the pitching duties for IHCC, with each going three innings. Three Falcons' errors made four of Scottsdale's runs unearned.
Indian Hills has a single game with Yavapai on the schedule for Wednesday.
