Falcons Rally For Split

Creston, IA -- After losing the first game of a Region 11 doubleheader with Southwestern CC, 5-3, Indian Hills recovered to take the nightcap, 8-7, scoring a run in the top of the 8th inning to gain the split.

Yuliecer Arias singled home Kevin Arroyo with the game-winning run in the top of the 8th and A.J. McElderry who had blown the save opportunity by allowing SCC to score twice in the bottom of the 7th, shut down the Spartans in the last of the 8th to get the win.

The Falcons overcame some shaky defense with only two of the Spartans' seven runs earned.  IHCC starter Jake Stalzer only gave up two hits in 4 1/3 innings and struck out six, but was charged with four unearned runs.  Adam Deneke pitched well in relief of Stalzer, striking out four in 1 2/3 innings.

Arias had three hits and two RBIs and Zach Sims had two hits and scored twice for IHCC.  Daryl Velez had a three-run homer in a five-run 3rd inning.

Indian Hills scored a run in the top of the 5th to take a 3-2 lead in the opening game, only to see Southwestern plate three runs in the bottom of the inning.  All the runs were charged to starter Matt Lashlee who took the loss.

IHCC outhit Southwestern 9-7 with Arias and Levi Grassley getting two hits apiece.  Grassley, Jason Bonilla and Tyler Hermann had the RBIs.

A four-game weekend series at home against Marshalltown CC is next up for the Falcons.
