Falcons Hold Off Glendale for Split

Glendale, AZ -- Indian Hills used three relievers to stem a late-game rally and hold on to beat Glendale CC, 7-6, to gain a split of Monday's doubleheader. Glendale broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the 5th to take the opener, 5-1.

Anthony Gagliardi started the second game for IHCC and held Glendale without a hit for the first five innings. But a high pitch count forced Falcons' coach Cam Walker to go to his bullpen in the 6th, with Indian Hills holding a 7-1 lead. By the time the inning had ended, Glendale had cut the lead to one run. Sam Ross, the third IHCC pitcher in the inning, got out of the inning, stranding the tying and go-ahead runners on base.

Ross struck out three of the four hitters he faced in getting the save as Gagliardi notched his first collegiate win.

After being held to just one run in the opener, the Falcons started fast in the second game, scoring four times in the top of the 1st. Tyler Hermann's bases-loaded triple was the big blow in the inning. Jason Bonilla singled in a run before Hermann's hit.

The top three hitters in the IHCC order -- Kevin Arroyo, Yuliecer Arias and Guillermo Cruz -- had consecutive run-scoring singles as Indian Hills tacked on three more runs in the 4th.

Arias had three hits and Hermann two and seven different players scored a run.

Cruz knocked in Zach Sims with a single to account for Indian Hills' only run in the first game.

IHCC starter Jake Stalzer was cruising along for four innings, but a leadoff walk and a hit on an 0-2 count started Glendale's four-run 5th.

Indian Hills had six hits, but only one was an extra-base hit. That was a double by Cruz, who was the only Falcon with two hits.

A doubleheader with South Mountain CC on Tuesday is next up for the Falcons who are 5-3 after dividing the two contests on Monday.
