Falu Returns to Speak at Banquet

Centerville -- Former Indian Hills Community College standout Irving Falu will be the featured speaker for the annual IHCC baseball banquet. The banquet is scheduled for Thursday, February 10, at the Manhattan Restaurant in Centerville.

Tickets for the event are $15 each and can be purchased in advance from the Indian Hills baseball coaches, at the IHCC Administration Building on the Centerville campus, or at the Athletic Office on the Ottumwa campus. Tickets will also be available at the door.

The banquet will include dinner, an auction, the chance to meet members of the 2011 Indian Hills baseball squad and coaches, and remarks by Falu. Dinner will be at 7:00 p.m.

Falu was a two-year starter for Indian Hills. He played all of last season with the Omaha Royals, the Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Falu hit .272 in 119games for Omaha, leading the team in at-bats, hits and stolen bases while finishing second in runs and triples.

A native of Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, Falu was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2001 draft, but opted instead to attend Indian Hills. He was an All-Region performer for the Falcons and batted .374 as a sophomore with seven homers and 38 RBIs for an IHCC team that advanced to the JUCO World Series in 2003.

Falu’s older brother, Melvin, also attended Indian Hills and played professionally in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization.

Irving Falu started his pro career in 2003 after he was selected by the Royals in the 21st round of the June First-Year Player Draft. He has worked his way up Kansas City’s organizational ladder, including a full season with Burlington in the Class-A Midwest League in 2005.

His best minor-league seasons came in 2008 when he hit .301 for Northwest Arkansas in the Texas League and 2006 when he had a .299 average for High Desert in the California League.
